Reformations Of School Essays - Education, Education Reform
Reconstructions Of School Training assumes a major job in the improvement of any country. History is observer that those countries who didn't perceived the significance of training were damned, and instruction assumed a key job in the accomplishment of the created countries. A fruitful nation like America faces numerous difficulties with respect to training. A portion of these difficulties are: the manner by which to all the more likely accomplish instructive chance, and to discover approaches to manage such issues and instructive problems for American kids. To discover the appropriate responses and answers for these issues we can not overlook the exchange of transforming of schools, rather, better approaches for instruction, rebuilding of American schools, and suggestions to improve may be the main response to these issues. In the accompanying passages, issues like powerless educational plan and poor guidelines in the schools have been distinguished, and proposals have been made to dispense with these issues . Likewise the issues and mistakes with respect to the conveyance of assets by the administration for the schools have been tended to, and suggestions have been made that these financing ought to be disseminated similarly and as needs be to the states. The government should pay attention to this issue more and help the states on a more noteworthy level. Even now when we have entered the 21st century, a first world nation like America which should be a good example for the remainder of the world is confronting the issue of poor norms in their schools, for example, objectives, desires, and necessities. There is an extraordinary inconsistency on people groups measures versus the schools gauges. Individuals set elevated requirements that are hard and here and there difficult to accomplish by understudies and educators, while a few schools don't coordinate these guidelines and even pass kids who can't peruse or have poor instructive abilities. So as to have high scholastic gauges there must be superior in state funded training frameworks. The framework should be changed on a very basic level. Educators can assume a significant job and should meet up on a typical stage to accomplish a shared objective and that is the improved nature of instruction. Great correspondence between school, educational committees, and school organization is sig nificant, so educators can be heard and tuned in to. School should just recruit exceptionally qualified and capable instructors. Understudies are generally acquainted with a feeble educational program, a large portion of the occasions they wind up taking nonacademic courses than scholastic. School days are short and as a result of poor standard in instructing understudies do not have the chance to learn material in productive manners. A portion of the suggestions to make the framework progressively effective are to expand the quantity of days in school year, understudies ought to be permitted to take unique courses and they ought not be confined to remain when all is said in done instructive projects as it were. To make the educational program solid it ought to incorporate the most extreme number of required scholastic courses. The prerequisites must be content. There must be harder pupil and littler classes so as to wipe out the issue. Approaches and projects ought to be controlled , and advocates ought to must have power over educational plan, and how the instructing happens. Different proposals to improve training incorporate solid initiative by principals of school. Alongside the educators capability in the territory of instructing, there must be staff amicability. To rouse instructors toward these changes, their school way of life must be redesigned as well. Instructors ought to have their own office their own telephones and better working conditions and appealing pay rates. State ought to get extraordinarily associated with the government funded instruction also. Graduation prerequisites for understudies ought to be set by the state, and neighborhood regions ought to likewise be able to control schools. Neighborhood instructors ought to be given greater power and they ought to be approved to recruit or fire principals. Guardians with low livelihoods who can't give their kids fundamental school instruction ought to be helped monetarily, and youngsters ought to have more opportunity to convey and collaborate with educators. Gatherings in the school ough t to be increasingly adaptable relying upon the understudies capacities. Similar educators should remain with a gathering of understudies for a few years so they have a superior opportunity to get familiar with the shortcomings and qualities of the understudies, and it is

To Be Effective As A Counsellor Sociology Essay
To Be Effective As A Counselor Sociology Essay This paper will investigate being compelling as an instructor. The attributes that could be relied upon to be found in a powerful guide will be examined. Explicit reference will be made additionally to the manners by which a customer should feel when they are within the sight of a compelling instructor. Before an instructor can be named either compelling or inadequate, it ought to be noticed that a far reaching meaning of an advocate, and since a guide can best be characterized as far as directing , then an obvious meaning of advising is vital. As indicated by the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, an instructor is an individual who has been prepared to prompt individuals with issues, particularly close to home problems(p.332). This definition as of now gives one a thought of how to characterize directing this can be characterized as expert exhortation about an issue. (p. 332). Another manner by which advising can be characterized is agreement with the Merriam-Webster Online word reference , which says directing is proficient direction of the person by using mental strategies particularly in gathering case history information, utilizing different method of the individual meeting, and testing interests and perspectives (got to 04/04/2012). These definitions are very instructive, particularly as far as giving one a thought of what's in store a guide to be and what's in store from an instructor or an advising meeting. They offer understanding into the kind of setting an advocate would work in, the field of study that a guide may have attempted and such like. In any case, one thing the previously mentioned definitions need is the ability to widen ones possibilities about guiding and the job of an instructor in the public arena. Directing is only restricted to singular treatment and is taken no further. In any case, an individual who is legitimately associated with advising be it an advocate, a researcher of directing or even a customer who talks with an advisor can concur that advising is something beyond an expert exhortation or direction; its an expert relationship(counselling.org) in light of the fact that the instructors participates in some type of collaboration with his customers , which he identifies with every cus tomer uniquely in contrast to the following. This relationship is multidimensional, it isn't just between the guide and customer (well in any event not in all cases), however is one that can lead a customer to meet and relate with different experts; regardless of whether it be wellbeing experts or something else. The advisor also, in certain occasions, would become more acquainted with a larger number of individuals than at first plannedthese individuals would be those that the guide would need to work with (alluding customers to such individuals). These future word related specialists, therapists, money related counselors, and so on. This makes advising an expert powerful relationship which expects to help the customer who comes requiring help of one kind or the other. Directing includes a procedure, the point of which is to help other people to help themselves by settling on better decisions and turning out to be better choosers of choices (iona-k-lister.suite101.com). So this rel ationship isn't one that ought to be bound to individual issues just, in light of the fact that it is such a wide relationship, that it has the ability to enable assorted people, families, and gatherings to achieve emotional well-being, wellbeing, instruction and profession goals(counselling.org). What can an advisor do to cause a customer to feel safe? As it has just been built up, an instructor must comprehend that what he has with the customer is something other than expense for-serviceit is an exceptional relationship (sci.csuhayward.edu). In light of this, it gets simpler for the aide to cause his customer to feel safe. Regardless of whether the customer doesn't comprehend the idea of the relationship, the aide does thus should manage the customer to an information on such data. Like in each relationship, the two gatherings included have a section to play; a section which is especially intended to be played by the particular partner; so it is with the expert connection between the guide and the customer. So if the customer doesn't know about the relationship that is there between them, it is the advocates obligation to edify the customer. What's more, this will in truth be what can start the way toward causing the customer to feel safe. On the off chance that a customer doesn't have the foggiest idea about that he is involved with the advocate, the guides each push to cause the customer to feel safe will be for all intents and purposes pointless. One thing that an advisor can do to cause his customer to feel safe particularly in singular treatment is attempt by all methods important to kill sentiments of inadequacy with respect to the customer. As was referenced before, people are on the whole extraordinary and remarkable. So a guide may find that utilizing Alfred Adlers Individual Psychology in his advising style may be useful in disposing of the previously mentioned sentiments. Mediocrity takes ordinary sentiments of ineptitude and overstates them, causing the person to feel as though it is difficult to accomplish objectives and in this way miserable to try(Friedman Schustack, 2012, p.115). An advocate can likewise change his phrasing, never calling his customers patients as some other wellbeing experts do however continue calling them customers, since this sounds progressively populist and less pejorative(sci.csuhayward.edu). Causing a customer to feel safe in the guiding setting isn't simple, so if an advisor can do that, this says a ton regarding his viability as an instructor. They ought to have the option to show a customer that they perceive the constraints of their own power(sci.csuhayward.edu) to assist customers with forestalling feeling mediocre; demonstrate an ability to find out about their way of life, foundation, and so forth. Secrecy is another factor in causing a customer to feel safe; in that, yet also in building up and keeping up a solid helpful relationship(sci.csuhayward.edu). At whatever point important, the guide ought to advise the customer regarding the cutoff points to secrecy at all undermining way that could be available. There is additionally the issue of numerous connections; a successful guide knows not to frame a relationship with a customers relative or any other person that is near the customer. He likewise doesn't frame a non-proficient connection with individuals who as of now have an expert relationship shaped with him, since this is ruinous it can cause it hard for the customer to feel safe in the directing meetings. What Characteristics Should Effective Counselors Possess? The fundamental point of this exposition is to demonstrate being a powerful as an instructor, so it ought to be nothing unexpected that all through the article, this inquiry is by all accounts replied through the different responses to the past inquiries that the task raises. Characteristics, for example, classification, the capacity to direct customers toward profitable objectives, and the capacity to set up and keep up connections are seen as of now in past segments of the paper. Different characteristics, similar to sympathy, unlimited positive respect and harmoniousness are basic to being powerful as an advisor; these will be talked about at a later stage. A significant part of a successful guide is the capacity to encourage fullexpression of the customers emotions, without occupying any consideration regarding their own feelings(iona-k-lister.suite101.com). A compelling advocate must have the option to tune in to a customer and have no preference. In spite of the fact that advisors have their own qualities, these ought not be forced on the client(iona-k-lister.suite101.com). As indicated by iona-k-lister.suite101.com a decent advocate is somebody who can learn not to make decisions in the interest of the individual being made a difference. Different characteristics that one may hope to discover in a compelling advisor are tolerance and acknowledgment, which help the guide to forgo demonstrating scorn toward those customers that are not amiable. Instruction is another factor to consider; individuals will in general imagine that since they have a Degree and are enrolled with the guidance, they know it all there is to know. Viable instructors are eager to get familiar with themselves, other guide, and even their customers. Social aptitudes ought to likewise be investigated by an instructor that needs to be viable; as an advocate, one meets a wide range of individuals from various foundations and societies; so one needs to realize how to see all parts of verbal and non-verbal correspondence. Another significant quality to have is carefulness, never uncoverin g what others state or do inside the directing setting. Since regardless of whether an instructor doesn't state different customers name; the way that he uncovers a specific customers circumstance to another without the assent of that customer, he is seen as amateurish by the present customer. (iona-k-lister.suite101.com; www.sci.csuhayward.edu) How Important are Carl Rogers Core Conditions in Counseling? So as to acknowledge completely the significance of something, one should initially comprehend what precisely the thing is. On the off chance that that information isn't given, the affirmation will be nevertheless an undertaking done to breathe easy. Subsequently, before the significance of the center conditions can be talked about, an away from of these will be given. As indicated by Cormier Hackney(2012) compassion is the capacity to relate to or comprehend the sentiments and feelings of a customer as though you were feeling that way, just without losing the as though quality(p.23). Genuine positive respect is communicating to a customer the characteristics that cause him to feel that he is extraordinary and acknowledged as an individual. Consistency is viewed as the partners capacity to stay consistent with himself within the sight of the customer. The demonstration of being certifiable and not permitting adjustment to impact him in any capacity, particularly when complying with please a customer. As characterized by simplypsychololgy.org genuine constructive respect is the place guardians, huge others(and the humanist specialist) acknowledge and love the individual for what the person is. Mathematics for Computer Science Top 10 Proof Techniques NOT Allowed
Mathematics for Computer Science âTop 10 Proof Techniques NOT Allowedâ After going through a quarter-life-crisis and switching a lot about my approach to MIT (more on that later), Ive finally figured out my classes for junior fall. One of the classes Im in this semester is 6.042, or in regular-speak: Mathematics for Computer Science. It. Is. SUPER. Actually, I didnt expect it to be this great at all. Even though I loved math in high school, when I came to MIT, I became disillusioned both with math and my own abilities. After taking 18.02 and 18.03, I just wasnt stellar at it anymore, probably because I didnt study enough, and mostly because of cyclical reinforcing feelings that math became uninteresting and difficult. But when I was teaching Probability and Combinatorics in Italy, passion for problem solving, mathematical exploration, and experimentative curiosity revived in me. I remembered that I love puzzles and thinking unconventionally to solve cool problems. And that is exactly what 6.042 is about. The actual topics covered are Proofs and Number Theory, Structures (Graph Theory, Relations and Partial Orders), Counting, and Probability. If any of those words gave you a giddy feeling, you should absolutely check out the OCW course here or the current course here. In fact, the entire textbook is online! The instructor in the OCW lecture videos is the famous Tom Leighton, who only teaches it every two years. The last time he taught it, Fall 2012, he earned a 6.8/7.0 teaching score in the end of term evaluations. Wow. I can see why the class is very entertaining and engaging. In fact, I can prove it to you by sharing what we started off our third lecture with today. Behold: Top 10 Proof Techniques NOT Allowed in 6.042 10. Proof by throwing in the kitchen sink: The author writes down every theorem or result known to mankind and then adds a few more just for good measure. When questioned later, the author correctly observes that the proof contains all the key facts needed to actually prove the result. Very popular strategy on 6.042 exams. Known to result in extra credit with sufficient whining. 9. Proof by example: The author gives only the case n = 2 and suggests that it contains most of the ideas of the general proof. 8. Proof by vigorous handwaving: A faculty favorite. Works well in any classroom or seminar setting. 7. Proof by cumbersome notation: Best done with access to at least four alphabets and special symbols. Helps to speak several foreign languages. 6. Proof by exhaustion: An issue or two of a journal devoted to your proof is useful. Works well in combination with proof by throwing in the kitchen sink and proof by cumbersome notation. 5. Proof by omission: âThe reader may easily supply the details.â âThe other 253 cases are analogous.â ââ 4. Proof by picture: A more convincing form of proof by example. Combines well with proof by omission. 3. Proof by vehement assertion: It is useful to have some kind of authority in relation to the audience. 2. Proof by appeal to intuition: Cloud-shaped drawings frequently help here. Can be seen on 6.042 exams when there was not time to include a complete proof by throwing in the kitchen sink. 1. Proof by reference to eminent authority: âI saw Fermat in the elevator and he said he had a proof . . .â Here are some other common proof techniques that can be very useful, but which are not recommended for this class. ⢠Proof by intimidation: Can involve phrases such as: âAny moron knows thatâ or âYou know the Zorac Theorem of Hyperbolic Manifold Theory, right?â Sometimes seen in 6.042 tutorials. ⢠Proof by intimidation (alternate form): Consists of a single word: âTrivial.â Often used by faculty who donât know the proof. ⢠Proof by reference to inaccessible literature: The author cites a simple corollary of a theorem to be found in a privately circulated memoir of the Slovenian Philological Society, 1883. It helps if the issue has not been translated. ⢠Proof by semantic shift: Some standard but inconvenient de?nitions are changed for the statement of the result. ⢠Proof by cosmology: The negation of the proposition is unimaginable or meaning less. Popular for proofs of the existence of God. ⢠Proof by obfuscation: A long plotless sequence of true and/or meaningless syntac tically related statements. ⢠Proof by wishful citation: The author cites the negation, converse, or generalization of a theorem from the literature to support his claims. ⢠Proof by funding: How could three di?erent government agencies be wrong? ⢠Proof by personal communication: âxn + yn = zn for n 2â [Fermat, personal communication]. ⢠Proof by importance: A large body of useful consequences all follow from the proposition in question. ⢠Proof by accumulated evidence: Long and diligent search has not revealed a counterexample. ⢠Proof by mutual reference: In reference A, Theorem 5 is said to follow from The orem 3 in reference B, which is shown from Corollary 6.2 in reference C, which is an easy consequence of Theorem 5 in reference A. ⢠Proof by ghost reference: Nothing even remotely resembling the cited theorem appears in the reference given. ⢠Proof by forward reference: Reference is usually to a forthcoming paper of the author, which is often not as forthcoming as the ?rst. ⢠Proof by metaproof: A method is given to construct the desired proof. The cor rectness of the method is proved by any of the above techniques. The pdf of all this can be found here. This leads to the point that a lot of the parts of an MIT Education are available for free, online. It doesnt mean that the parts add up to the whole, but they sure do make something. There are people like Scott Young who earn the full MIT Computer Science education for free in only a year by dedicating themselves to online resources (reddit link, TEDx video, opinion). You can experience a lot about classes online, and I highly recommend it. But one thing you cant recreate is the in-class atmosphere: the feeling of classmates cheering on peers to solve a problem against the TAs, and the elation when said peers toss the winning candy out at the audience. Times like these, I feel like I Have Truly Found Paradise.

Nutmegââ¬â¢s triglycerides are mainly the glycerol ester of a single fatty acid which is called myristic acid. This ester, called trimyristin, represents the 20-25% dried weight of nutmeg (Wilcox amp; Wilcox, 120). The purpose of this lab is to isolate trimyristin from nutmeg by performing a simple solid-liquid extraction and to purify the trymyristin using the method of recrystallization. Procedure: Place 5 g of nutmeg and 50 mL of DCM into a 100 mL round bottom flask, and reflux the mixture for 30 minutes. Refer to p.120 (E) in Wilcox amp; Wilcox. Rotary evaporation will be used instead of steam distillation. Ethnic Literature and Postcolonialism In Bartaââ¬â¢s ; ââ¬Å"Gadââ¬â¢s Tangs'â⬠Reading by using Postcolonial theory The definition of ethnic literature ââ¬Å"is literature like any other, except that it contains ethnic references. â⬠(Reilly p. 2). We will write a custom essay sample on Ethnic literature or any similar topic only for you Order Now Another definition of ethnic literature is when there is a literature work that contain religious beliefs, racial issues, linguistics, or cultural heritage. In another word, ethnic literature is the literary work that includes particular culture, beliefs, or linguistics distinction. Postcolonial literary theory draws attention in the issue of cultural difference emerging in the society. One of the issues hich may often appear during the class discussion is hybridity. It seems that people who have been faced by the fact that they are living in a ââ¬Ëhybrid worldââ¬â¢ tend to be confused by their real status. They realize for their interest, but they can not avoid the possibility becoming ââ¬Ëin betweenââ¬â¢. Although , they are included into one part, the native part, but on the other hand they can not deny the deep feeling to be pleasant considering themselves different with the other. There is a kind of more value they have compared with their surround, and they think it is worthy to be kept. Of course, this feeling comes into their mind by some reasons. There must be an additional value added into their original culture. The additional value may be in the form of a new ideology, belief or view which are brought by the dominating. The dominated rarely conscious with the impact. They usually only feel that it is a natural process which become the impact of daily social interaction they are engaged in. Another issue which emerges in postcolonial discussion is about dominated-dominating one. We can not expect who actually take the role as ââ¬Ëdominatingââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëdominatedââ¬â¢. The practice may turn over, the dominated may become the dominating in the same time oward different object, vice versa. We are also introduced by ââ¬ËOthernessââ¬â¢ theory. It makes someone consider that she or he are different from the other, and other people is not the same with her or him. Gadââ¬â¢s Tangsââ¬â¢ tells a story about a girl life, namely Teyi. She is a Javanese girl who grew up in the Javanese tradition. She lives with his parents and sibling in tangsi area. She was taught to become an obedient girl by her mother with many limitations as a girl. She helps her mother to sell fried bananas every day. Teyi finds herself limited by some rules which are considered as the right rules for her mother. She even does not know how ââ¬Ëloveââ¬â¢ or how to be ââ¬Ëlovedââ¬â¢ by a man. She was taught to be a polite woman. She finally finds who she is when she is introduced to Putri Parasi by Ndara Tuan Kapten SarJubehi who has helped her. That is the beginning of her new experience to recognize a new world, the world that she has never imagined before. Putri Parasi teaches her everything to be ââ¬Ëa good lady. Putri Parasi likes Teyi for her politeness. She more likes Teyi after being saved when her disease comes immediately. Putri Parasi expects to teach her how to behave well. She even teaches Teyi to speak Dutch. Teyi starts to be able to read and write. Putri Parasi really wants to prepare her to be taken to Surakarta Keraton and introduced her to a man who will be married with her. She plans to make Teyi deserve to have a husband from Keraton families. In the novel Gadis Tangsi written by Suparto Brata, we can see some unexpected phenomenon occur. It makes me realize that actually there are still many things covered even by what Javanese people considered as ââ¬Ëbudaya adiluhung. The word ââ¬Ëpolitenessââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëhospitality and ââ¬Ëdignity which come into people mind when they heard about Javanese culture become blur after they read this novel. Javanese woman who is considered as an obedient woman and become a mercy for whom takes her as a wife may be surprised by what Suparto tells about Teyi and Dumilah. He brings them in this novel as representative of Javanese woman character, in different point of view. However, the story about them, for me, is far from the stereotype of common Javanese women (may be Just a few). The feeling of ââ¬Ëin betweenââ¬â¢ seem to be experienced by Teyi. She starts to know about how the way the higher status people behave since she meets Putri Parasi. Teyi realizes that her life style is quite different from her, and she is glad when she knows hat Putri Parasi does not mind introducing this new culture to her. From this intentional interaction, after she is taught how to behave like ââ¬Ëputri bangsawanââ¬â¢, Teyi starts to consider she has a chance to be the same with them. Even she lives with her parents, she starts to consider that she is better than them. She has been raised from the lower part. She has more power than the people in the house. The very obvious impact of this teaching actually appears when Teyi has been left by Putri Parasi. After she passed away, Teyi become independent from the influence of Putri Parasi. Although, there are still some traces of her teaching inside Teyi which reflect in the way she behaves. She seems take the dominating position over her husband, Sapardal. Sapardal feeling about his lower position when they have been married becomes the cause of the divorce. Only two days of marriage, and Teyi considers that she has a right to sue divorce, while Sapardal can only keep silent without any comment. In this relationship, Sapardal as a man who actually considered as the dominatingââ¬â¢ take the role as the dominatedââ¬â¢. He does not feel on the same level with Teyi. He admits that he has no power compared to Teyi. He even has no courage to touch her in their first night of marriage. Here, we can see the role between man and woman has shifted. Brata seems to show us that the role of people in the society is like running on the moving wheel. The dominating and dominated are only a symbol of someone position, which also can be shifted based on where we are standing. Sapardal may fail in maintaining his position as superior in front of Teyi. The cultural change also appears in this novel. Sexual intercourse is not considered as a sacral any longer for almost all the women in this novel. During my reading, I wonder if I ead Indonesian culture literary work, especially belong to Javanese one. However, Brata wrote the novel using the Indonesian condition in the past, in the colonial occupation. In this situation, it is not easy to determine which one who still hold the original value since the influence of other ideology come into the life in that simple way. The force of a new ideology input is not directly felt in this novel. The indigenous people enjoy the acculturation between the dominated and the dominating. It also happens in the shifting of the way they see sexual intercourse actually is. What we call as a taboo becomes commonly conducted by the people. Teyi is defined as a free woman, even she has been married and becomes a wife of Sapardal, and she breaks the rule by having intercourse with Ndara Tuan Kapten SarJubehi. It seems that she wants to take a revenge to Dumilah who is considered nad cheated ner by having romantic attair witn ner master. Sapardal can not do anything. He has failed to become a good husband. This thinking is from his own side. When we look at this phenomenon, again, Teyi proves that she has had a power over a man from her own society. She starts to have a right to consider a man like Sapardal is not at the same level with her. However, in my opinion it will not happen if Sapardal never has the way of thinking. Actually, he has thought that she is great and different from the other woman in his environment before they are married. That makes he has no courage to touch her at their first night. It also makes Teyi feels not being regarding or respecting as a wife. She thinks that Sapardal has no desire toward her, and she thinks that it is better to ask divorce. What a short way of thinking! I found that Teyi has put a wrong way of thinking about what Putri Parasi had taught to her. It seems that she does not consider marriage as a sacral relationship any longer. ââ¬ËLoveââ¬â¢ relationship has been considered as a ââ¬Ërealââ¬â¢ relationship when we have passion to have sex with our couple. Is that so simple? That is the way Teyi think about love basically. It is shown also when she does not mind to have sex with her ex-master, Ndara Tuan Kapten SarJubehi, and then she starts to love someone else, Ndara Mas Kus. There is no any guilty feeling. Finally, we can conclude that there are three aspect of postcolonial reading for Gadis Tangsi has been discussed above. First, hybridity appears when Teyi finds herself has involved nd being a part of Putri Parasiââ¬â¢s society, Keraton environment since she has been able to behave and speak like her, so she considers that she is a part of Putri community. While she has that feeling, she still can not avoid other people consideration about her who is only becoming a servant and will not become like them. Second, dominating feeling toward Sapardal comes into her mind. There is dominating-dominated in shifting model between them. It seems a denial for a man who usually considered as the dominating one, while Teyi proves that it can be shifted. Last, ââ¬ËOthernessââ¬â¢ theory also emerges in this novel. After having taught to ave attitude and behave like Putri Parasi model, Teyi finally considers herself different with other woman in her society. How to cite Ethnic literature, Papers

Teaching Creationism In Schools Essays - Creationism, Pseudoscience
Teaching Creationism in Schools The issue of teaching creationism in the public schools has long been debated. Over the years many different arguments have been made. First creationists tried to have the teaching of evolution outlawed. This issue went to the Supreme Court in 1968, where in _Epperson v. Arkansas_ the high court ruled against banning the teaching of evolution. Soon after this decision creationists began to call for 'equal time', or the equal treatment of creation theory and evolution theory. When this attempt also failed creationists turned to 'creation science' (Grunes 465). Today the major argument for the teaching of creationism in public schools is that creationism is a scientific theory and thus should be taught alongside evolution. The combatants against creationism being taught in public schools are those who believe creation science is bad science and those who believe it violates the separation of church and state. Supporters of creation science are organizations that are collectively refere d to as the New Christian Right, such as the Institute for Creation Research. On the other hand, those who oppose creation science are usually scientists, educators, and civil liberties organizations (Grunes 466). The majority of those people who desire for creationism to be taught in the public schools cite that it is scientific. They push for the teaching of creation science which is defined as "scientific evidence for creation and the inferences from that evidence" (Tatina 275). The inferences from that evidence are "sudden creation of the universe from nothing, recent formulation of the earth, creation of man and other biological kinds, a worldwide flood", and "the insufficiency of mutation and natural selection in bringing about development of living kinds from a single organism" (Grunes 470). These creation scientists, as they are called, want the teaching of the two scientific theories, evolution and creation science, to be taught side by side. In 1992 a Vermont school district passed a resolution stating that "creation be presented as a viable theory on an equal status with the various theories of evolution" (Scott 12). The main desire is that creation be given the same time as evoluti on to be presented as a possible theory on the beginnings of this universe. Many people feel that creation science is only an attempt to side step the religious issue. Since religious beliefs cannot be taught in public schools the creationists "repackaged the Bible as science" (10). This statement causes one to consider if the Bible is a scientific book. Many creationists would agree that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and not a scientific book. Yet, creation scientists want us to believe that the Bible is scientific. By comparing creation science to evolution, creation scientists attempt to logically show creation is a science. They draw parallels which attempt to put creation science at the same level as evolution. The definitions of creation science and evolution science in the Arkansas law demonstrate this attempted parallel. The law states, "Creation-science means the scientific evidences for creation and inferences from those scientific evidences" and, "Evolution-science means the scientific evidences for evolution and inferences from those scientific evidences" (Ruse 292-93). There are also those who believe creationism should not be taught because it is bad science. Scientists who have studied the claims of scientific creationism state that it "misstates evolutionary theory, presents erroneous data, and reveals a gross misunderstanding of the nature of science" (Scott 10). For example, creation scientists often use quotes that look as if to challenge evolution, but they are often taken out of context and these quotes from scientific literature actually are questioning the 'how' of evolution (Ruse 289). In _Scientific Creationism_ a quote by Theodosius Dobzhansky is used which makes the reader believe he is questioning evolution (Morris 6). Theodosius Dobzhansky is one of the greatest supporters of evolution. Ruse writes that "philosophically and methodologically the creationists do not act like scientists, and that substantively the creationist's contentions are without scientific merit" (Ruse 290). Ruse also states that "science must be explanatory, tes table, and tentative" (301). Some believe that creation science is "a jumble of half-truths" (In the 17). In the _Epperson v. Arkansas_ decision the argument that creationism is scientific was rejected because of the fact that it did

Common Family Myths and Stories
Common Family Myths and Stories Nearly every family has a cherished story or two regarding their distant ancestors - one that has been handed down from generation to generation. While some of these stories probably have a lot of truth in them, others are actually more myth than reality. Perhaps its a story that youre connected to Jesse James or a Cherokee princess, or that a town in the old country is named after your ancestors. How can you prove or disprove these family stories? Write Them Down Hidden in the embellishments of your familys story are probably at least a few grains of truth. Ask all of your relatives about the famous legend, and write down everything they tell you - no matter how insignificant it may seem. Compare the different versions, looking for inconsistencies, as they may indicate those parts are less likely to be rooted in fact. Ask for Backup Ask your relatives if they know of any items or records which may help document the family story. It doesnt often happen, but sometimes if the story has been carefully handed down from generation to generation, then other items may have been preserved as well. Consider the Source Is the person telling the story someone who was in a position to have experienced the event first-hand? If not, ask them who they got the story from and attempt to work your way back to the original source. Is this relative known as the storyteller in the family? Often good storytellers are more likely to embellish a story so as to elicit a favorable response. Bone Up on History Spend some time reading about the history of the time, place or person which relates to your familys story or legend. Background historical knowledge may help you prove or disprove the legend. Its unlikely that your great, great Grandfather was a Cherokee, for example, if he lived in Michigan in 1850. Test Your DNA While your genes may not have all the answers, a DNA test may be able to help you prove or disprove a family legend. DNA can help you determine if you descend from a particular ethnic group, your family came from a particular region, or you share a common ancestor with a particular person. Common Genealogy Myths Legends The Three Brothers MythIts always three brothers. Brothers who immigrated to America, and then headed out in different directions. Never more or less than three, and never sisters either. This is one of the favorite of all genealogy legends, and one that very rarely turns out to be true. The Cherokee Indian Princess StoryNative American ancestry is a fairly common family storyà and one which may actually turn out to be true. But there really isnt such a thing as a Cherokee princess, and isnt it funny that it is almost never a Navaho, Apache, Sioux or Hopi princess? Our Name Was Changed at Ellis IslandThis is one of the most common myths found in American family history, but it actually almost never happened. Passenger lists were actually created at the port of departure, where the native names were easily understood. Its very likely the family name may have been changed at some point, but it probably didnt happen at Ellis Island. Family Inheritance MythThere are a lot of variations on this popular family story, but very rarely do they turn out to be true. Some of these myths have their roots in the numerous inheritance scams of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, while others may reflect a hope or belief that the family is related to royalty or a famous (rich) family by the same name. Unfortunately, the family inheritance story is often used by scammers to trick people out of their money.

American Attitudes towards Homosexuals Research Paper
American Attitudes towards Homosexuals - Research Paper Example In the traditional sense, the discrimination against these individuals has mostly been based on gender bias and the majority perception of the existence of only two genders ââ¬â that of the male and female sex. Despite this dominant gender perception, homosexuals have been persistent about their rights and about their place in society. The laws have also been firm on the application of the equal protection of rights and the due process of law, as far as these homosexuals are concerned. As a result, these homosexuals have taken on a more public presence and have become more visible to the general population. In a way, they have made their presence known in almost all aspects of American life. However, even as their public visibility has increased dramatically over the past several decades, prejudicial attitudes against them have remained persistent. This paper shall discuss American attitudes against homosexuals, discussing the minor claim that public visibility of homosexuals has increased. In detail, it shall discuss the ways in which homosexual visibility has increased, more particularly through the media and through the ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t ask, Donââ¬â¢t Tellâ⬠military policy. ... Most Americans have become embroiled heavily in the contrasting opinions on homosexuality with some of them favoring the rights of homosexuals to self-promotion and perpetuation, and the rest expressing their outrage for homosexuality based on religious and moral grounds. In general, studies evaluating attitudes against homosexuals yielded negative attitudes against these individuals (Besen and Zickling, p. 251). These results have been seen in studies carried out during the 1980s and 1990s, including large scale reviews and surveys during the 1990s (Besen and Zicklin, p. 251). In recent years however, the attitudes towards homosexuals have improved with many Americans considering a more liberal approach towards civil rights (Besen and Zicklin, p. 251). Many of them have been able to gain some form of social acceptance from the general populace; however, to some extent many of them have persistently encountered these social issues on acceptance from moralists. Various factors have be en considered in explaining these attitudes towards homosexuals. Individuals who have negative attitudes towards homosexuals are usually authoritarian and are very traditional in their views of sex roles and of minority groupings (Besen and Zicklin, p. 251). These attitudes have also been spurred on by health concerns, with the percentage of HIV/AIDS sufferers of a higher rate among gay men. Such health concerns have further fueled the homophobic tendencies against homosexuals. Inasmuch as these negative attitudes towards homosexuals have been unfavorable, legal mandates have established provisions in order to protect the practice of civil rights among these homosexuals. Along with the more liberal ideals which many Americans

The Colorado Rivers Help and Hindrance of Settlement in the Western United States :: Colorado River Geography American History Essays
The Colorado River's Help and Hindrance of Settlement in the Western United States Geographers can tell you that the one thing that most rivers and their adjacent flood plains in the world have in common is that they have rich histories associated with human settlement and development. This especially true in arid regions which are very dependent upon water. Two excellent examples are the Nile and the Tigris-Euphrates rivers which show use the relationship between rivers and concentrations of people. However, the Colorado River is not such a good example along most segments of its course. There is no continuous transportation system that parallels the rivers course, and settlements are clustered. The rugged terrain and entrenched river channels are the major reasons for sparse human settlement. We ask ourselves, did the Colorado River help or hinder settlement in the Western United States? As settlers began to move westward, the Southwest was considered to be a place to avoid. Few considered it a place to traverse, to spread Christianity, and a possible source of furs or mineral wealth. Finding a reliable or accessible water source, and timber for building was difficult to find. There was a lack of land that could be irrigated easily. By the turn of the century, most present day cities and towns were already established. Trails, roads, and railroads linked several areas with neighboring regions. Although the Colorado River drainage system was still not integrated. In the mid 1900ââ¬â¢s many dams had been built to harness and use the water. A new phase of development occurred at the end of the second World War. There was a large emphasis on recreation, tourism, and environmental preservation. The terrain of the Colorado River is very unique. It consists of Wet Upper Slopes, Irregular Transition Plains and Hills, Deep Canyonlands, and the Dry Lower Plains. Wet Upper Slopes: Consist of numerous streams that feed into the Colorado River from stream cut canyons, small flat floored valleys often occupied by alpine lakes and adjacent steep walled mountain peaks. These areas are heavily forested and contain swiftly flowing streams, rapids, and waterfalls. These areas have little commercial value except as watershed, wildlife habitat, forest land, and destinations for hikers, fishermen, and mountaineers. Irregular Transition Plains and Hills: These areas are favorable for traditional economic development. It consists of river valleys with adequate flat land to support farms and ranches. Due to the rolling hills, low plateaus, and mountain slopes, livestock grazing is common.

McDonaldââ¬â¢s global marketing strategy Essay
1. Identify the key elements in McDonaldââ¬â¢s global marketing strategy (GMS). In particular, how does McDonaldââ¬â¢s approach the issue of standardization? McDonaldââ¬â¢s has become the most famous and successful fast-food restaurants all over the world. The concept of fast food and American-style food (burgers, fries) has conquered the world. We can talk about standardization regarding Mcdoââ¬â¢s strategy: the marketing mix is basically the same. Products:Fast food, American food (Burgers, fries and soda) Price:Cheap, ââ¬Å"Burger Indexâ⬠* Promotion:American style, mass communication, attract children, same brand name, colors and logo Place:Quick service, crowded area However, we cannot speak about a total standardization since McDonalds has adapted its menus, declining its marketing mix regarding some aspects of the local cultures. * The expansion and standardization of the hamburger has led to the creation of a price index that can be used as an economic reference between different countries known as the Big Mac Index. 2. Do you think government officials in developing countries such as Russia, China, and India welcome McDonaldââ¬â¢s? Do consumers in these countries welcome McDonaldââ¬â¢s? Why or why not? We would think that McDonalds would have trouble to locate in countries with very distant customs or rather reluctant to the American way of life. But the brand had a very good concept. McDonalds was also a way for these countriesââ¬â¢ population to eat copiously for small budgets. When McDonalds opens its first restaurant in Russia, the company creates its own supply chain, including farms, within the USSR. For political reasons, McDonaldââ¬â¢s Canada was responsible for this opening, with little input from the U.S. McDonalds has managed to gain the trust of local authorities and local population by working with agricultural producers to develop local supply food sources. Mentalities and cultures have also evolved a lot, since the beginning of globalization. In Asia, young people quickly join this way of eat, because it was much more modern. However, McDonalds didnââ¬â¢t deny the significant foodââ¬â¢s customs: In 1996 when McDonaldââ¬â¢s entered in India for the first time, it offered a Big Mac made with lamb called the Maharaja Mac. 3. At the end of 2003, McDonaldââ¬â¢s announced it was selling the Donatos Pizza unit. Then, in 2006, the Chipotle chain was spun off. In light of these strategic actions, assess McDonaldââ¬â¢s prospects for success beyond the burger-and-fries model. MacDonaldââ¬â¢s wanted to reassert itself in its core business: burger and fries. So they decided to focus on their basic concept and to abandoned businesses they believed to be complimentary. This strategy of specialization allows: A cost-leadership An improvement of productivity A leaderââ¬â¢s statue in terms of innovations An excellent marketââ¬â¢s knowledge To give clear brandââ¬â¢s identity and goals better defined In doing so, they wanted to reestablish themselves as the reference nà ° 1 of burger & friesââ¬â¢ fast-food. 4. Is it realistic to expect that McDonaldââ¬â¢s ââ¬â or any well-known company ââ¬â can expand globally without occasionally making mistakes or generating controversy? Why do anti-globalization protesters around the world frequently target McDonaldââ¬â¢s? I think that a company can expand globally without necessarily making big mistakes. But in this case, that company should invest a lot of money in marketing research upstream but also continually to be always aware of the local environment. The local as well as general decisions must take into account all collected data. Here is the reason why there are sometimes mistakes. It is an intricate process, which requires time and money. But it goes without saying, that each operation must be consistent with each marketingââ¬â¢s location. Regarding McDonaldââ¬â¢s, it is normal that all novelties proposed havenââ¬â¢t always been liked because countryââ¬â¢s food, tastes and eating habits are very variable depending on each population. McDonaldââ¬â¢s has been very performing in finding a basic menu that pleases almost everyone. This is that power which has Mcdo, to standardize eating habits, that scares anti-globalists. In fact, food is often a dear element to ones who wish to preserve their cultural identity. Finally, I guess it is possible to be accepted worldwide, but it is risky to alter the traditions of the foreign country in which the company want to establish itself. Case 2: Acerââ¬â¢s strategy. 1. Acerââ¬â¢s strategy has been described as ââ¬Å"divide and conquer.â⬠Explain. Acer, founded in 1976 by Stan Shih, is the fourth computer manufacturer in the world. The Taiwanese group is specialized in manufacturing and commercialization of computers, monitors and other computer peripherals. The different brands of the group are: Acer, Packard Bell, Gateway and eMachines. Contrary to McDonalds, Acer has opted for a strategy of differentiation rather than standardization. Indeed, when Stan Shih uses the phrase ââ¬Å"divide and conquerâ⬠itââ¬â¢s to highlight the groupââ¬â¢s decision to preserve the identity and personality of each groupââ¬â¢s brand and to use the privileged relation that these brands have built over the years with their own customers: Packard Bell targets the general public eMachines the large public ââ¬Å"first priceâ⬠Gateway targets larger companies Acer focus on mobility to attract both consumers and the SoHo market (Small office and Home Office) 2. How did the ââ¬Å"global markets-local marketsâ⬠paradox figure into Stan Shihââ¬â¢s strategy for China? Stan Shih decision to focus on the Chinese market is quite paradoxical regarding the ââ¬Å"divide and conquer strategyâ⬠: The word ââ¬Å"divideâ⬠is a paradox because Acer wants to refocus on the Chinese market, so the target will be much more homogeneous. And on the other hand, ââ¬Å"conquerâ⬠is not the interest here because Chinese are already conquered. So the strategy division is quite paradoxical as far as ââ¬Å"local marketsâ⬠are concerned, because the population is more uniform. But this strategy is maybe very successful too at a local level. 3. Can Acer become the worldââ¬â¢s third largest PC company, behind Dell and Hewlett-Packard? We can indeed imagine that Acer may become the worldââ¬â¢s third largest PC company. Since the refocus of Acer in China, the results have been impressive. However, it must stand out from Lenovo. To grow its market shares, Acer must have a more global view and this will make the difference. If the group wants to change this ranking, he cannot restrain its strategy to the Chinese market. Acer should also improve its B to C, because it is more recognized in the world of B to B. Acer has to be more innovative and gain the trust of diverse populations. 4. Even before the current economic crisis deepened, growth in the U.S. PC market had begun to slow down. Despite strong competition from Dell and Hewlett-Packard, Acerââ¬â¢s U.S. market share increased from 1 percent in 2004 to 3.3 percent by the end of 2006. What are Acerââ¬â¢s prospects for gaining further share in the United States? It was difficult for Acer to enter in the USââ¬â¢ market: Dell and HP have a monopoly in the PC there. The United States expansion is very closely linked to the merging with the American computer hardware manufacturer Gateway, while the European move is related to the acquisition of the Packard Bell company. Acerââ¬â¢s intention is to offer a wide range of computers: the decision to keep the different brands by checking that they donââ¬â¢t overlap is an ideal combination. EMachines offers cheap desktop, Acer made cheap laptops and Gateway is located in the midrange and high end. This is probably what has allowed Acer to increase its market share, and it is probably thanks to its cheap range that the crisis hasnââ¬â¢t had any impact on its growth in the United States.

The Effects Of Biological Systems And The Impact On Human...
I strive to enhance the quality of human life through sound investigation and precise medical judgement. My earliest influence in the medical field stemmed from frequent visits to Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital of Cincinnati diagnosed with chronic asthma. Fortunately, my unsolicited visits to the hospital opened a faucet of interest in medicine. I am fascinated by the human body and how the body responds in a variety of induced unfavorable conditions. With much consideration and educational preparation I have concluded that as a career I will study pathology with considerable concentration on the effect of biological systems and the impact human disease has on society. My plan is to study Pathobiology as a doctoral student which will properly expose me to professional experience as it relates to the progression of human disease. By practicing pathology I hope to prolong life by simply identifying the mechanism of human disease, validating prevention and identifying the most effective tr eatment of disease. Pathobiology incorporates the sub disciplines of Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics to understand the mechanism of disease and how it is transmitted from one patient to the next. Inevitably, research ensures practical lab experience, insightful knowledge and proper exposure to current topics of study that can possibly pave the way for proper prevention and treatment of disease worldwide.
